A Reuters analysis shows there has been a gradual decline in conventional weapons on display since 2012, Kim Jong Un's first parade as leader, and a move to showcase more sophisticated weapons such as ballistic missiles.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Saturday met with senior North Korean officials including leader Kim Jong Un's sister over lunch at Seoul's presidential palace in the most significant diplomatic encounter between the rivals in years. The senior US official said Pence was not trying to avoid the North Korean officials but rather ignore them.

Moon took the opportunity to highlight the visit of North Korean officials to the global competition, referring to the "Olympic Games of peace". Kim Yo Jong is scheduled to meet with President Moon on Saturday.

Kim came to South Korea via a private jet earlier in the day as a member of the high-ranking DPRK delegation, led by Kim Yong Nam, president of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly.

Kim Yo Jong, 28, is the first member of the ruling Kim family bearing the bloodline of the sacred Mount Paektu, a centerpiece of the North's idolization and propaganda campaign, to cross the border into the South since the 1950-53 Korean War.

It said the two sides held "a comprehensive discussion. on the inter-Korean relations and various issues on the Korean peninsula in an amicable atmosphere", but did not say whether the North's weapons program was mentioned.

The Moons, Nam and Kim all stood again as athletes from both Koreas marched together behind a blue-and-white "unification" flag for the first time since 2007.

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence and his wife were seated beside the Moons and next to Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his wife. Analysts say that the missiles, which were successfully flight tested three times a year ago, could potentially reach deep into the USA mainland when perfected. The stage was filled with almost 3,000 athletes from 92 countries ready to compete in Pyeongchang.
