Olympic Roundup: Snowboarders Parrot, McMorris bring home Canada's first medals

Canada's first medal in Pyeongchang could come courtesy of its high-flying men's snowboard crew, as all four qualified for tonight's slopestyle final, beginning at 8 p.m. ET.

17-year-old teenager Red Gerard delivered the first medal of the 2018 Olympic Games for the United States, and he did so with a stellar slopestyle run in a do-or-die situation. Samuel Girard of Ferland-et-Boilleau, Que., finished fourth in the men's 1,500-metre short-track speedskating event, a solid result for the Olympic rookie.

Max Parrot, far left, and Mark McMorris, far right, earned Canada's first two medals of this year's Winter Olympics on Saturday night.

NBC was showing Gerard's second of three runs when the US Olympic Committee congratulated him for winning the first gold of the Olympics for the US. At just 17 years old, Gerard becomes the youngest USA snowboarder ever to win an Olympic medal, and the youngest snowboarding gold medalist of any nation since the sport was adding to the Olympic program 20 years ago.

Liverpool defeat Southampton and Twitter reacts to Reds win
I think we deserved the three points, [we got a] clean sheet, no injuries - [it was] almost ideal ". Lovren is hoping to be in Liverpool's XI when the Reds take on Southampton in the Premier League .

It turned out that the men's slopestyle event - that most viewers assumed was being shown live - was actually on tape-delay of about 30 minutes.

Perhaps most surprised was Red himself, who told WKYC's Will Ujek it was all "above me".

Meanwhile, Norwegian and Canadian teams dominated qualification for the men's snowboard slopestyle final yesterday with both nations having all four of their athletes qualify for today's final. I remember the whole time waiting, just trying to survive because (I) ruptured (my) spleen and all that and my jaw was just hanging. "I can not believe what just happened. That was enough for me just to land a run, so to get first is insane". But he fell on his last trick and was surpassed by American Red Gerard for the gold.

Where competitors were scheduled to take three runs each in the final round with only their best score counting in the standings, now snowboarders will only have two runs each.

Ryan Blaney: Fast Clash Practice at Daytona
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) - Hendrick Motorsports rookie William Byron has posted the fastest lap in practice for the Daytona 500. Joey Logano and Erik Jones will be in the second row, with Jimmie Johnson and Martin Truex Jr . lined up behind them.

When it happened, I thought it might have been a soda. "Just to land a run would have been plenty for me and to get on the podium - but to get first is insane", he said.

Gerard and Parrot will face off again in 10 days, when the big air competition starts at Phoenix Snow Park in Pyeongchang.

It's the second Olympic bronze for McMorris, who is coming back from life-threatening injuries suffered in a backcountry crash less than a year ago.

He paid tribute to the support of 18 family members who turned out to cheer him on to the first USA gold medal of the Olympics.
