According to the New York Post, Ragbir, an Indian American, was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement after a routine check-in on January 11 which sparked protests leading to almost 20 arrests.

Hundreds of people mobilized to support Ragbir, and de Blasio, a Democrat and critic of Trump's immigration policies, wrote authorities this week to ask that Ragbir not be deported.

Ragbir said, "This lawsuit is not just about me, it is about all of the members of our community who are speaking out in our struggle for immigrant rights".

Ragbir was scheduled for deportation Saturday but won a temporary stay Friday while a federal judge reviews his case.

"Pending briefing and consideration of a preliminary injunction motion, the government has agreed to stay Mr Ragbir's deportation temporarily".

"We thought it was a shot in the dark", Ragbir said to his supporters today.

Ragbir, who immigrated to the US from Trinidad and Tobago, has been under an order of deportation since 2006, after serving prison time for the 2001 criminal conviction and being held in immigration detention. The defendants will have until March 1 to file a response and the plaintiffs must file a reply by March 14, according to AM New York.

In a statement forwarded by an ICE spokeswoman, Matthew Albence, the agency's executive associate director of enforcement and removal operations, denied that ICE arrests immigrants based on their political advocacy or in retaliation for critical statements. "You might be saying wow, Amy's finally got a smile on her face".
