The official launch of the feature is likely to boost digital payments in India, considering WhatsApp's popularity, but will also intensify competition for digital wallets. The appearances in the past have been on earlier beta version of the popular msessaging application.

According to a TechCrunch report, the company is testing a new payments feature in the app's beta version in India that will allow people to send money to other WhatsApp users, excluding merchant accounts. India is WhatsApp's largest market with over 200 million users active daily users. The shortcut for Payment shows up in the list of attachments alongside Documents, Gallery, Audio, Location, and Contact.

To access it, users will need to get their mobile number linked with their bank account and authorised for mobile banking.

Users must then configure the feature by first verifying their phone number via SMS and choosing a bank. You can then click on Payments, which will then prompt you to link to your UPI. Additionally, you will have to create a UPI account (if you don't have one previously) through the UPI app or your respective bank's website/ app.

The potential for WhatsApp to dominate Indian P2P payments is strong, given that millions of people have come online in the region thanks to lower-cost data plans and cheap smartphones. But its launch is expected to happen soon on both Android and iOS platforms. But, there's no option to switch from video to audio call.
