North Korea's Kim Jong Un invitations South Korean president for summit

A North Korean delegation, the highest-ranking to visit the South and led by Kim's younger sister, concluded its visit on Sunday after charming and intriguing the South Korean public, but still faces deep scepticism over Pyongyang's sincerity towards improving relations.

Pence's efforts to keep the spotlight on North Korea's nuclear program and human rights abuses have taken a back seat to the widely viewed images of the two Koreas marching under one flag during Friday night's opening ceremonies - and the invitation of dictator Kim Jong Un for South Korean President Moon Jae-in to visit the North.

The countries are still technically at war since their 1950-53 war ended in a truce rather than a peace treaty.

Vice-President Mike Pence, has been critical of the North's participation in the Games, seeing it as an attempt to create just such a division. "But we'll see what happens".

South Korea said it would seek ways to continue engaging North Korea, including trying to arrange more reunions for families divided by the war and lowering military tensions.

"The North Koreans should understand that for a summit or any kind of serious talks to occur, Moon needs to be able to take something to Washington - something that addresses denuclearization", he said before the North's invitation to Moon was announced.

After years of ineffective implementation, those sanctions may have begun to finally bite, which, according to a Japanese government official and experts, helps explain why Kim Jong-un agreed to send a national team and his sister to the Olympics.

Both countries have fielded a unified women's ice hockey team, the first time an inter-Korean team has competed at any Olympic Games. The parties were still discussing a convenient date, he added.

Tillerson considers Israel visit amid Iran tensions
Tillerson will conclude the trip in Ankara with talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, which are expected to be tense. The opposition is calling for a boycott of the vote, after serious challengers were either arrested or forced to quit the race.

An American member of the Olympic Committee has said she thinks the unified Korean hockey team should win the Nobel peace prize.

The invitation puts Mr Moon in a hard position as he had promised to engage with the North, but his United States ally is cautious of Seoul falling for North Korea's charm offensive. "I am Kim Ryon-hui, a citizen of Pyongyang", she was quoted as saying by the pool report. "His behaviour is nothing but an ugly sight being reminded of insane Trump". Pence conferred with U.S. President Donald Trump every day he was in Asia.

He told reporters: "The point is, no pressure comes off until they are actually doing something that the alliance believes represents a meaningful step toward denuclearisation".

Earlier, it has suggested that talks could start between the United States and North Korea once South Korea suspends its joint military exercise with South Korea. Pyon said he doesn't have big expectations from his skiers.

Bach will make the visit on the North's invitation as part of an agreement between the IOC, Pyongyang and Seoul, but the goal of the trip has not been revealed.
