Australia's ministerial code of conduct requires legislators to declare relationships with any staff member of a cabinet minister.

The center-right government of Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has been thrown in turmoil after the revelations that his deputy Minister has been entangled in sex affair, straining the alliance between his Liberal Party and the National Party of Barnaby Joyce.

Mr Turnbull said Mr Joyce would be on leave for a week from Monday.

"Barnaby has made a shocking error of judgment".

"He has set off a world of woe for those women and appalled all of us", Mr Turnbull said.

Ms. McGowan said Thursday that although she welcomed the prime minister's announcement, the government should consider a code of conduct for all those who work in Parliament.

Turnbull said the ban on sexual relationships would apply even if the minister was single.

Greens leader Richard Di Natale moved a motion calling on Mr Joyce to resign for "clearly breaching the standards required of ministers" and if he does not resign, urging the National Party to sack him.

The Prime Minister's edict comes after he announced that Joyce would be taking next week off as personal leave while Turnbull is in the USA, and finance minister will be acting PM in his place.

He has denied allegations that he had breached guidelines surrounding giving jobs to ministers' partners when Campion was given a promotion previous year to leave his office for another government job.

"I have been told by a trustworthy source that in December previous year Barnaby Joyce's office drafted a Christmas card to be sent out to the Deputy PM's friends and colleagues", Fordham told his listeners on Tuesday.

Barnaby Joyce will take leave from February 19 to 25.

Mr Joyce has been under vast pressure this week due to revelation he had an affair with a colleague, who is now pregnant with his child.

"The truth is as we know, is most of the ministers, most of the bosses in this building if you like, are men and there is a gender, a real gender perspective here", he said. But she will also be travelling, which means Senate leader Mathias Cormann will take the position.

He said the present ministerial code was "truly deficient".

"Those who believe he has breached ministerial standards or want to believe that, they should actually make the case for where the breach has occurred", he said.

Joyce was due to take over as the acting Prime Minister next week when Turnbull heads to the USA for meetings with President Donald Trump, but Joyce is instead taking a leave of absence to try and avoid his tenure becoming a circus.
