Hampshire's headquarters was touted as a likely double victor in the ECB's announcement of its major match allocation for five years from 2020 to 2024.

The decision sees Trent Bridge miss out as well as extending the Ageas Bowl in Southampton's wait for a prestigious Ashes Test.

Hampshire's Ageas Bowl has been widely tipped to be awarded a lucrative Test against Australia when the European Central Bank board announces venues for the 2023 series and inaugural Twenty20 franchise tournament. Edgbaston will continue to host T20 Finals Day, while both grounds were handed four Tests in the five-year cycle.

Further details of a new domestic Twenty20 competition were also announced by the European Central Bank on Wednesday, with London, Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham, Nottingham, Cardiff and Southampton to host matches. The Ageas Bowl, the Swalec Stadium, Edgbaston, Headingley, the Oval, Lord's, Old Trafford and Trent Bridge were announced as the venues "around which new partnerships would be formed and new teams created".

Australia won at Lord's and The Oval in 2015, but haven't played at Old Trafford since the rain-affected draw in 2013.

Work began over the winter at Headingley to rebuild the old Rugby Stand.

The home of cricket will, however, retain its two Tests per summer alongside its London neighbour, The Oval, to complete the list of six venues that will host the premier global format over the five-year cycle.

The ECB said of the chosen venues: "Together, they provide a strong geographical spread, high capacity for attendance, quality experience and access for the widest audience".
