Mikaela Shiffrin overcame both delays and some of the best skiers in the world to claim her first gold medal at the 2018 Winter Olympics, winning the giant slalom.

Gold medallist Mikaela Shiffrin (on snow) celebrates with silver medallist Ragnhild Mowinckel of Norway after the women's giant slalom at the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018 on February 15, 2018 in PyeongChang, South Korea.

"We had the medals ceremony, which didn't start, I think, until 8:05 or 8:10, and normally every day I've been trying to go to bed around 8:30 and I didn't get to bed until like 10 last night after getting home from the awards", Shiffrin said. So now we got the ball rolling.

It was the second Olympic gold for the champion skier from Vail, Colorado. That's considered her strongest discipline - her lone Olympic title, in fact, until Thursday - but the giant slalom was still a good race for Shiffrin to open with at these Games. Sofia Goggia, who finished Thursday's GS in 11th, had been training with Shiffrin the past few weeks, and in the days leading up to the event, she told NBC analyst Steve Porino that her jaw dropped when she saw Shiffrin's GS training runs. It was the second-best mark after the initial run and put Shiffrin in great position.

While Shiffrin may experience bouts of self-doubt, her competitors see only a composed and focused assassin on the course.

"Today I was trying really hard but I also was feeling the hill, I was feeling the mountain and I was feeling my skis", she said.

Mikaela Shiffrin says she felt sick to her stomach and was "kind of puking" before her first run in the Olympic slalom.

Resi Stiegler, Mikaela Shiffrin and the rest of the women's giant slalom field had prepared to race since Monday (Sunday MST).

Shiffrin said in Sochi she wanted five gold medals in these games, a seemingly impossible task.

Shiffrin is bidding to win her second gold medal in two days at the Pyeongchang Games and third of her career. The way she's skiing she might have gotten them, too, had Mother Nature not tossed her an unfortunate curveball. No American has won three.

On Saturday, Lindsey Vonn will make her Pyeongchang Games debut in the super-G at the speed course in Jeongseon.

Norway's Ragnhild Mowinckel led when Shiffrin entered the gate for her final run hours later, with Mölgg as the only medal contender to follow.

"It was certainly not normal preparation, but I also knew going into these Olympics that it's not normal races, it's not normal preparation, so I have to be prepared for anything", Shiffrin said.

"Everyone wants gold", Shiffrin said.

"It was marvelous", Jeff Shiffrin said.

But she wasn't the only one: Her first run was second-fastest; her other was fourth-fastest.

"But she's so in there, she can do it better than us". I'm not super-far off.
