Intel could spoil Broadcom acquisition campaign for Qualcomm

Intel considering a bid for Broadcom part of a range of acquisition alternatives in reaction to the Singapore-based chipmaker's bid for USA rival Qualcomm Inc., the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter. Although Intel no longer develops SoCs for smartphones, it still manufactures other components, like cellular radios and the combination of Broadcom and Qualcomm could mean a serious threat to the company. The report, which cited multiple anonymous sources, said that Intel has considered making its own bid for the combined company, and was working with advisers.

Such a deal would cost Intel, which has a market capitalization of about $244 billion, more than Broadcom's market cap of $1o4 billion. The news comes as Broadcom is aggressively pursuing its bid for Qualcomm.

Intel is considering several other options as well, including making other smaller acquisitions in order to stay competitive.
