Fiorentina win emotional first match since Astori's death

Fiorentina paid tribute to Davide Astori on Sunday afternoon in the first game since their captain's tragic death a week ago.

The Serie A club defeated Benevento 1-0, with Vitor Hugo grabbing a T-shirt bearing Astori's image after scoring.

Before the match at the Artemio Franchi stadium, the two teams and fans observed a minute of silence in tribute to the Italy defender, age 31, who died on March 4 in his sleep from an apparent heart attack, reports Efe.

The entire day was dedicated to Astori's memory, with all the mascots wearing the defender's now-retired No.13 shirt - half in Fiorentina jerseys, half in Cagliari colours...

Astori wore the number 13 shirt and the match stopped after 13 minutes, with 60 seconds applause taking place.

Vitor Hugo, the player who replaced Astori in the starting lineup, scored the only goal of the match in the 25th minute, leaping high to head in Riccardo Saponara's corner.

Fans in the stands held messages and banners and chanted "one captain, there's only one captain!".

During the last stages of the game, Benevento's Massimo Coda struck the post, with Fiorentina's new captain Milan Badelj also hitting the woodwork.
