The Winter Paralympics were officially opened at a ceremony in Pyeongchang, South Korea on Friday.

North Korea's first Winter Paralympians did not appear alongside South Korea's team, as happened at the Winter Olympics opening ceremony, after a row over the blue-and-white Korean unification flag. Ma Yu-chol and Kim Jong-hyon, the first two North Koreans to compete in the Winter Paralympics, were the bottom two finishers as they ended 26th and 27th, respectively. There are a record 80 gold medals up for grab, South Korean News Agency (Yonhap) reported.

After Canada's historic medal haul at the 2018 Winter Olympics, Canadian Paralympic athletes are hoping for similar success.

That was back in the 2010 games in Vancouver where Team USA sled hockey won the gold medal.

Switzerland's Theo Gmur took his first Paralympic gold in the men's standing skiing, and United States skier Andrew Kurka, the reigning downhill world champion, won the race in the men's sitting category.
