Justin Trudeau Says Tariff Exemptions And NAFTA Deal Are Not Linked

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday sought to reassure steel and aluminum workers anxious about possible U.S tariffs, telling them the government would always have their backs.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he has an array of measures, including tariffs, to prevent the world's producers of cheap steel from using Canada as a back door to slip the metal into the United States.

Trudeau says he's been telling U.S. President Donald Trump for over a year that there is no national security threat from Canadian steel or aluminum.

Trump recently exempted Canada and Mexico from tariffs on steel and aluminum, although the USA government has been dropping hints that the exception is only temporary.

Trump signed the proclamation on those tariffs last week and the exemption given Canada was a last-minute victory for the Canadian government. The steel tariff investigation was launched to see the impact of steel imports on US national security.

Trudeau's comments came during a tour of Canadian steel-producing towns, where he is showing support for workers in the industry. Two days later, word trickled out that Canada and Mexico would both be given exemptions, pending the outcome of NAFTA talks.
