Sessions is reviewing that recommendation and can give it the final approval or step in to stop the process.

The inspector general's office, which for more than a year investigated the FBI's handling of the Hillary Clinton email investigation, has concluded that McCabe authorized FBI officials to speak with a journalist for an October 2016 story in The Wall Street Journal.

No announcement is imminent, Justice Department spokeswoman Sarah Isgur Flores said in a statement.

"That process includes recommendations from career employees and no termination decision is final until the conclusion of that process", she said in a statement.

Snow warning amid threat from 'Beast from the East Two'
Parts of England and Scotland may face more snow towards the end of the week, with cold winds from the east set to strike again. The cold snap may well last into next week and there is likely to be at least some snow in parts of the UK.

McCabe is a 21-year bureau veteran, and would be the first deputy director to be fired. Though Trump has criticized McCabe as biased in favor of Clinton, the story in question actually undercut that narrative and suggested that Federal Bureau of Investigation officials wanted to more actively probe the Clinton Foundation but were discouraged from taking more aggressive steps by the Obama Justice Department.

Trump has pressured Attorney General Jeff Sessions ― another frequent target of Trump's wrath ― to get rid of McCabe.

Reporters had been chasing down leads about McCabe's fate in the past few days as he approached his official retirement date.

McCabe, 49, came under Republican criticism in 2016 because he helped oversee the Clinton email investigation even though his wife had accepted donations from Democratic political organizations for an unsuccessful campaign in 2015 for the Virginia state senate.

Horowitz told lawmakers during a November congressional hearing that he is aiming to release the report in the "March, April time period". The president remarked in December that McCabe was "racing the clock to retire with full benefits".

The inspector general was interested in McCabe's role in authorizing officials to talk about the matter, people familiar with the case said, because the story detailed ongoing criminal investigative work, which law enforcement officials are not normally allowed to discuss.
