Ahead of the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections, the BJP has added an element of unpredictability to the otherwise tiresome and predictable polls by fielding a fourth candidate from the state.

Union Railway Minster Piyush Goyal on Tuesday said the Election Commission (EC) has been informed about the irregularities in the nomination forms of Congress Rajya Sabha candidate Naranbhai J. Rathwa and independent candidate P.K. Valera. According to the affidavit submitted by Kardam on November 6 past year when contesting mayoral election from Meerut she was aged 51 years. There will be 59 vacancies in the Rajya Sabha in April, including 17 from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and 12 from the Congress party.

He also suggested that both the parties should work together to find a solution. After the meeting, Mr Maken said it was a fruitful discussion on the issue.

Shukla is expected to reach Gujarat by 3 pm today to be able to file the nomination papers.

However, Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala accused the BJP of playing a motivated games and said,"The BJP played this lowly game during Ahmed Patel's election and now again".

Today was the last date for scrutiny of nominations while March 15 is the last day for withdrawal of candidature.

If reports are to be believed, the party has made a decision to replace Rathwa with Shukla at the instructions of Congress chief Rahul Gandhi. The nomination of Independent Paresh Moolani was rejected since it was not backed by the statutory number of proposers.
