Dublin ranks high on quality of living ranking

"Cities in the United Kingdom continue to rank highly for quality of living, and remain attractive destinations for multinationals and their employees", said Kate Fitzpatrick, Mercer's global mobility practice leader for Britain and Ireland.

Mercer's authoritative survey is one of the world's most comprehensive and is conducted annually to enable multinational companies and other organisations to compensate employees fairly when placing them on global assignments.

The factors taken into account for the analysis include: political stability, crime, law enforcement; medical and health considerations; standards and availability of global schools; public services and transportation; recreation, consumer goods and housing; but also the climate and record of natural disasters.

For the ninth consecutive year, Vienna tops our Quality of Living ranking, and other Western European cities continue to dominate the top of the list.

A year before Britain is expected to leave the European Union, its highest-ranked city, London, fell one rank to 41 in the survey.

Singapore's top ranking in Asia, a spot it also held previous year, puts it well ahead of regional rival Hong Kong, which placed seventh in the region and 71st globally.

"The results of Mercer's 2018 Quality of Living index indicate that, despite ongoing investment in infrastructure and innovation, the impact on living standards in Hong Kong is not leaping ahead", Peter KH Chan, Mercer's talent consultant in Hong Kong, said in a press release issued by the firm. Asian cities also scoring in the top 100 were Seoul at 79th, Taipei at number 84 and Kuala Lumpur at 85th. "Companies need to consider these factors in their value proposition to both their local and their expatriate employees", he added. Vancouver clinched the fifth spot and is the highest ranking city in North America.

This year, Mercer provided a separate ranking on city sanitation, which analyses cities' waste removal and sewage infrastructure, levels of infectious disease, air pollution, water availability and quality. In the world rankings, it also stayed in 25th place. Dublin ranks in 31st position alongside Belfast, Aberdeen and Edinburgh, and ahead of Glasgow (50), Birmingham (60) and London (67).
