James Comey memoir paints scathing portrait of Trump, rousing GOP furor

First Syria, now James Comey. This is Comey's first interview since he was sacked by President Donald Trump nearly one year ago. Virtually everyone in Washington thought he should be fired for the awful job he did-until he was, in fact, fired. "He lied to Congress under OATH".

Trump didn't take the revelations lying down, calling out Comey on Twitter a "weak and untruthful slime ball", and a "proven LEAKER & LIAR".

He said: "I was operating in a world where Hillary Clinton was going to beat Donald Trump, and so I'm sure that it was a factor".

Turning again to his childish taunts and nicknames, the president concluded (for now) by asserting that "Slippery James Comey, a man who always ends up badly and out of whack (he is not smart!), will go down as the WORST FBI Director in history, by far!"

Comey paints a devastating portrait of a president who built "a cocoon of alternative reality that he was busily wrapping around all of us".

In "A Higher Loyalty", Comey shares new details about his interactions with Trump, whom he compares to a mafia boss and whose behavior he says is "untethered to the truth".

Comey describes Trump as having been obsessed with the portion dealing with prostitutes in the infamous dossier compiled by British former intelligence officer Christopher Steele, raising it at least four times with the Federal Bureau of Investigation director.

"As far as I know".

Comey's comments come in an interview excerpt, below, released by ABC News Saturday. Hillary Clinton's campaign and the Democratic National Committee helped fund the research.

Stephanopoulos asked if Trump had a right to know about the source of funding.

"I know you. You were in an impossible position", Schumer told him, according to Comey. "It wasn't necessary for my goal, which is to alert him we have this information". By that point, Trump had already lectured Comey extensively on why the "pee tape" allegations couldn't possibly be true.

"I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go, " Trump said, according to Comey's account of the meeting, some of which he first shared in Senate testimony previous year.

You would think he is clearheaded enough that if you can just keep going a bit longer he will get a gold medal. Team-mate Jade Jones also came third in the women's T54 event on the final day of the Commonwealth Games.

"It bothered him if there was "even a one percent chance" his wife, Melania, thought it was true", Comey writes.

"I don't remember consciously thinking about that", Comey said, "but it must have been".

Some of the early news coverage of Comey's memoir has made a mockery of Trump, including the cover of Friday's Daily News in NY.

In the book, Comey also writes of some of Trump's physical attributes in an unflattering way.

- Comey writes that Trump said he was thinking about asking the FBI to investigate the allegation to prove it was a lie.

Comey told lawmakers he had given copies of his memo memorializing his talks with Trump to people outside the Justice Department and asked a friend to share its contents with a journalist.

On a grammatical note, the publisher said, "Although Trump rendered the word as an open compound (slime ball) in his tweet, the traditional form is as a closed compound (slimeball)".

Comey's disclosure shortly before the 2016 election that the FBI had reopened its investigation into her email use enraged Democrats.

Trump fired Comey in May, a decision that eventually led to the appointment of a special counsel to investigate Russia's 2016 election meddling and whether Trump has deliberately tried to obstruct the investigation.
