Over 200 participate in March for Science

This was the second March for Science, which debuted past year as part of more than 600 coordinated events across the planet.

Locals say this is a march is to bring awareness about the subject and also holding elected officials responsible when implementing policy without looking at the facts.

People across the world marched and rallied in the name of science Saturday.

Participants in the march, which took place in cities across Canada and around the world, hope to promote the need for all levels of government to tackle policy making with a scientific and evidence based approach.

People can also help by becoming citizen scientists and engaging in scientific research themselves, Cigliano said.

The city-leg of the march-attended by over 250 people-was organised by March For Science Organising Committee (MFS OC) and NGO, Breakthrough Science Society (BSS).

"We can not make decisions unless we know the truth and we know the facts".

Scientists also pointed out that educational and scientific institution have also come under attack not only in funding but also as regards academic freedom, autonomy and democratic functioning, even while school textbooks are being rewritten with false history, a communally jaundiced view and irrational ideas.

At a public meeting after the march, organisers read out messages from geneticist M.S. Swaminathan and former Anna University Vice-Chancellor M. Anandakrishnan.

Dave Harrington, the Lehigh Valley For All president, said the group hosted the rally because there hasn't been a change in the administration's stance on the environment and science since the last rally.
