IN farm recalls over 200 million eggs due to risks of salmonella

The FDA was made aware of the outbreak in cases of salmonella last month.

In February, Triple T Specialty Meats, based in Ackley, Iowa, recalled more than 9000kg of ready-to-eat chicken salad products that may have been contaminated with salmonella.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a notice about the recall Friday, warning consumers that 22 illnesses have been reported in states along the east coast of the USA because of the eggs. The outbreak spread to almost 40 states and sickened 132 people.

Of the 1.2 million people affected yearly, around 23,000 are hospitalized, while, unfortunately, around 450 people die.

So far, 22 reported cases of salmonella infections are believed to be tied to the contaminated eggs.

The USDA requires producers to wash eggs to reduce the risk of surface contamination, and most large producers take an extra step to sanitize the shells.

The bacteria itself lives in the intestinal tract of animals.

Symptoms include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. Most people recover fully without antibiotics or hospitalization. Of those, 23,000 cases are serious enough that the patient had to be hospitalized. Life-threatening complications may also develop only if the infection spreads beyond the intestines.
