The Newport, Rhode Island-born actor also made multiple appearances on "Saturday Night Live". Richard Moll played the court's iconic bailiff, Bull. The series, which ran from 1984 through 1992, made up part of NBC's "Must-See TV" Thursday night lineup that also included The Cosby Show, Family Ties and Cheers.

Anderson was also a favorite of "The Tonight Show" with Johnny Carson, and after "Night Court" he also had a role on the 1990 miniseries adaptation of Stephen King's "It" before leading the CBS sitcom "Dave's World", which was loosely based on the life of columnist Dave Barry and ran from 1993 to 1997.

Neil Patrick Harris revealed that he recently bought magic memorabilia from Anderson, including a phone booth with the actor's name on it. "I tip my hat to you, my friend", she wrote in the caption.

Anderson earned three Emmy nominations for his portrayal of the wise-cracking judge throughout the show's nine seasons and was honored as Magician of the Year by the Academy of Magical Arts in 1988.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Morgan, whom he married in 2000, and his two children from his first wife, Leslie Pollack.
