That puts it four cars ahead of the latest figures we have for Waymo, Alphabet's self-driving vehicle division thought to be among the leaders in the sector.

Apple's fleet of self-driving testing vehicles continues to grow rapidly, with 55 self-driving cars registered with California as of May 9, according to DMV figures.

It's important to note that companies like Waymo and Uber used to have more self-driving cars in California.

With a new permit and expanded fleet, things are finally starting to look up for Apple after years of hardship.

Said to be codenamed Project Titan, Apple's self-driving programme's fleet is reportedly made up of Lexus RX450h SUVs, each of which is fitted with huge racks of LIDAR and radar sensors as well as cameras.

On Tuesday, the sources said, "Apple has almost doubled the number of self-driving cars in its California test fleet".

At present, Apple has 55 self-driving vehicles that it is testing on public roads.
