Judge rejects Manafort motion to dismiss Russian Federation probe charges

Paul Manafort has struck out again in his efforts to get Special Counsel Robert Mueller's case against him thrown out or curtailed on the basis that Mueller's investigation was improper.

Manafort, a former chairman for the Trump campaign, has been charged in D.C. with money laundering, failure to register foreign lobbying and false statements.

US prosecutors said in a filing on Monday that defense attorneys had failed to provide evidence that news reports about Mueller's investigation of Manafort were based on matters before a grand jury in Alexandria, Virginia, that indicted him in February on tax- and bank-fraud charges.

Ruling on Airbus Subsidies Could Escalate Trade Tensions With Europe
To Airbus' point, one finding against the USA now remains before the WTO, which concerns a Washington state tax measure. The EU will now take "swift action to ensure it is fully in line with the WTO's final decision in this case", she said.

She added that it was appropriate for federal investigators to look into Manafort's business connections in Russia and Ukraine while Mueller's office investigated possible coordination between the Trump campaign and the Russian government.

"Given what was being said publicly, the Special Counsel would have been remiss to ignore such an obvious potential link between the Trump campaign and the Russian government", Jackson wrote.

"Manafort's civil case will be dismissed", United States District Judge Amy Berman Jackson wrote in the order.

How to trade the Trump-Kim US-North Korea summit
The report comes a week after Kim made his second trip to China in less than two months to again meet with President Xi Jinping . Pyongyang, he indicated, would have to dismantle its nuclear weapons and allow them to be transported to Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

"When it promulgated the regulations, the department anticipated that a special counsel, like any other prosecutor, could become aware of, and could have legitimate reasons to explore, paths that branch out naturally from the original investigation, as well as entirely new and disconnected allegations", Jackson wrote.

Jackson said the case against Manafort should proceed even if scrutiny of his past activity came about not from the investigation of "links" to Russian but rather as a "matter that arose" from that probe. And regardless, she wrote, it was clear that Mueller had been specifically authorized to investigate not only Manafort's possible links to Russian Federation but also his Ukrainian business. Manafort is also facing charges of bank fraud in Virginia. The Virginia indictment accuses him of hiding tens of millions of dollars he earned advising pro-Russia politicians in Ukraine from 2006 through 2015.

None of the charges against Manafort involve crimes related to Russian interference in the 2016 presidential campaign.

And result in stillbirths it does: in 2017, there were 30 syphilis-related stillbirths in California, the most since 1995. Young women have the highest rates of chlamydia , while men have the highest rates of syphilis and gonorrhea .

"It bears emphasizing at this stage that Manafort is presumed to be innocent of these charges, and it will be the prosecution's burden to prove him guilty beyond a reasonable doubt". Nevertheless, Manafort's claims seemed to take on a new life earlier this month when Judge T.S. Ellis, the judge hearing the remaining charges against Mueller, asked some skeptical questions about Mueller's authority during a recent hearing.
