SBU deputy chief Viktor Kononenko accused Vyshynsky of travelling to Crimea in 2014 to carry out "subversive" reporting and later collaborating with separatist groups in eastern Ukraine.

The Interfax-Ukraine news agency quoted Prosecutor-General Yuriy Lutsenko as saying that the media activities of the news agency and Vyshynsky are anti-Ukrainian and amount to "state treason".

The SBU claimed in an official statement that in the spring of 2014, Vyshynsky traveled to Crimea, where he personally took part in "propaganda campaigns aimed at supporting annexation and joining the peninsula to the Russian Federation" while working for the state-run RT news outlet, formerly Russia Today. SBU spokesperson Olena Hitlyanska wrote on her Facebook page that the journalist was detained, but gave no further details.

Vyshinski is a Ukrainian national who received a Russian passport in 2015 by presidential decree.

"We believe that this forbearance directly threatens the future of the common European space because it is promoting the suppression of dissent in the worst totalitarian traditions. We will address worldwide structures, including those related to journalism, in the OSCE, in order to stop the persecution of journalists in Ukraine", Kiselev stressed.
