Indonesia National Police Chief Tito Karnavian told reporters Monday that officers were working on the assumption that the attacks followed a directive from ISIS central command to avenge the imprisonment of former leaders of Jamaah Ansharut Daulah, an Indonesian jihadi group that supports ISIS.

The attacks have put Indonesia on edge as the world's biggest Muslim majority country starts the holy fasting month of Ramadan from Thursday.

It is said to be the deadliest since the 2002 Bali attack.

On Wednesday, police said they shot dead four of the attackers at the Sumatra police station and later arrested another who had fled.

The latest attack happens after a series of incidents in East Java - Surabaya Police headquarters bombing on Monday, three Surabaya church bombings on Sunday morning and an accidentally blast inside a low-priced apartment in Sidoarjo on Sunday night.

The police earlier disclosed that 8 militants with a white minivan launched the attacks.
