Two Parkland shooting parents running for Broward School Board

Lori Alhadeff, mother of 14-year-old freshman Alyssa Alhadeff, and Ryan Petty, father of 14-year-old freshman Alaina Petty, announced during a press conference on Tuesday that they have filed the official paperwork to become school board candidates.

This Feb. 14, 2018 frame from security video provided by the Broward County Sheriff's Office shows deputy Scot Peterson, right, outside Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla.

Alhadeff is running for a seat in Broward County School District 4, while Petty is running in Broward County School District 8. "The laws that we passed in Florida have been used over 130 times to keep firearms away from those who would hurt themselves and others", said Petty, "That's why I'm filing to run for school board". Alhadeff said a spot on the school board is the best way she can think of to work toward improving school safety: "I [don't] want any parent to go through the anguish I went thorough or for any child to say, 'Mommy, am I going to die at school today?'" she said, per NBC News.

They also criticized the district for what they see as a lack of openness, including failing to respond to requests for public information and changing stories about Cruz's involvement in the controversial Promise program, which provides alternatives to arrests for certain misdemeanors. She said discipline policies must be "revamped" and to "meet somewhere in the middle".

"It is my duty to make sure these schools are safe", she added.

"I want to ensure schools provide safety and a quality education, and there is transparency and accountability", Alhadeff told the Sun Sentinel. "This isn't about replacing the superintendent", Petty said about his candidacy.

Petty, 48, whose daughter Alaina was killed, plans to challenge incumbent Donna Korn, 46, for the at-large county seat. "And the only way I'm going to do that is if I get on the school board to make those decisions and make those changes".

But she and Petty do not favor firing Runcie.
