EU Takes Germany, Five Others to Court over Air Pollution

The nations - the UK, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy and Romania - had been given a final warning by the European commission in January.

Whilst the states had proposed additional measures following these warnings, Vella said the EU Commission had to conclude that "the additional measures proposed are not sufficient to comply with air quality standards as soon as possible".

The European Commission on Thursday made a decision to take Germany and five other European Union member states to court for breaching EU air pollution levels.

"We have said that this Commission is one that protects". Our decision follows through on that claim.

"The member states referred to the Court today have received sufficient "last chances" over the last decade to improve the situation", Commissioner for Environment, Karmenu Vella, explained. "It is my conviction that today's decision will lead to improvements for citizens on a much quicker timescale".

37 of the UK's 43 air quality zones don't meet European Union nitrogen dioxide limits, all of which should have fallen within safe limits by 2010.

The EU Commission had sent letters to countries and cities exceeding air pollution levels repeatedly but with the member states having failed to act, they will now be taken to court.

"We will shortly build on our £3.5 billion plan to tackle roadside emissions with a comprehensive Clean Air Strategy setting out a wide range of actions to reduce pollution from all sources".

The EU limit is 40 micrograms.

But he revealed last week that the United Kingdom environmental watchdog he proposes after Brexit would not have the automatic power to take the government to court.

As the announcement was being made, lawyers for Paris, Madrid and Brussels were in front of the European Court of Justice asking that the three cities be allowed to challenge vehicle emissions regulations set by the European Commissions and agreed by national governments.

The Frenchman said there could be no reduction in environmental standards after Brexit as Britain could otherwise seek a "competitive advantage" over its neighbours.
