Michigan State University Agrees to Pay $500 Million to Larry Nassar Victims

Roughly 300 victims have come forward, saying Nassar sexually assaulted them under the guise of medical treatment.

Michigan State University is expected to pay the $500 million out of pocket and then sue their insurance company to get the money back, according to a source with knowledge of the settlement.

More than 250 gave statements in court when Nassar was sentenced for sexual assault in January and February.

Survivors' attorney John Manly said, "This historic settlement came about through the bravery of more than 300 women and girls who had the courage to stand up and refuse to be silenced". The first Nassar lawsuits were filed in fall 2016, shortly after Nassar was sacked from MSU.

"Michigan State is pleased that we have been able to agree in principle on a settlement that is fair to the survivors of Nassar's crimes", Robert Young, a lawyer for the school, said in a statement as reported by the Post. "It was always about shifting culture from enabling abuse to empowering survivors", she said. I am thankful that the litigation phase is over so that my sisters and I can move forward.

The investigation led to the arrest of William Strampel, Nassar's boss at the university's College of Osteopathic Medicine, on charges of felony misconduct in office and misdemeanor criminal sexual conduct.

Trustee Brian Breslin says Michigan State acknowledges the "want for change" in relation to sexual assault consciousness and prevention. He was also found to have possessed child abuse images and is serving what is effectively a life sentence in prison. Gold medal Olympic gymnasts Jordyn Wieber, Aly Raisman, Gabby Douglas and McKayla Maroney all accused Nassar of sexually abusing them.

A 2014 investigation conducted by Michigan State cleared Nassar of sexual assault allegations. After serving that sentence, he will serve two sentences - one that's 40 to 175 years and another that's 40 to 125 years - in two MI counties for a total of 10 sexual assault charges.
