Thomas replaces Johnson as world number one

Thomas was the victor of the Jack Nicklaus Award as the PGA Tour Player of the Year for the 2016-17 season.

After 64 weeks at the summit of world golf, Dustin Johnson's time at the top is over.

Thomas has become the 21st world number one.

Johnson is something of an interloper in such company; he was been a beneficiary of an erratic period in the world game when the last 11 Majors have been won by different players.

Thomas is the reigning PGA Championship victor, and Webb Simpson's victory Sunday gives the US control of the four majors and The Players for the first time in 17 years.

The new World No.1 hasn't missed an individual cut since The Open past year, and has a worse finish of T22 in 2018.

Owning the position is a noble aspiration but one he is likely to find hard to fulfil.
