Russian warships armed with advanced cruise missiles will be deployed in the eastern Mediterranean Sea near Syria on a permanent basis, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Wednesday.

Since fighting broke out in Syria in 2011, the Syrian president has traveled three times to Russian Federation for talks with Putin - visits that underscored Moscow's status as Assad's chief backer.

The warships will remain on "permanent standby" to counter the "remaining terrorist threat in Syria", Russian state media quoted Putin as saying during a gathering of military and defense industry leaders at the Black Sea resort city of Sochi.

"The Syrian president has made the decision to send his part of a delegation to form the Constitutional Committee that is to work on Syria's constitutional law".

"Of course, after this military success, additional conditions have been created to restart a full-format political process", he said at talks with Assad on Thursday. He also visited Putin in Moscow in October 2015, soon after Russian Federation launched its military operation in Syria. Its military support not only ensured the survival of Assad's government but also changed the course of the war.

Putin told Assad that "a lot has been done" at Russia-sponsored talks between the Syrian government and the opposition in Kazakhstan.

"The next task, of course, is the economic recovery and humanitarian aid for those people in a hard situation", Putin added.

The two leaders discussed the ongoing clashes in Syria between pro-Assad forces and civilian rebels.

Russia, Iran and Turkey have been attempting to resolve the conflict in the talks that started past year - in competition with a US- and UN-backed Geneva initiative.
