Elon Musk to offer $1 rides in Boring Company tunnels

Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk promised a cheering crowd on Thursday that his controversial dream of burrowing a high-speed network of "personalized mass transit" tunnels under Los Angeles could be achieved without disturbance or noise at the surface.

On the question of risks to utility lines, Musk said The Boring Company's machines are digging below them.

Fares for Loop could cost as little as $1 per person, Musk suggested, though the actual cost will likely depend on a number of factors, and require input from multiple local and regional agencies.

Musk, who is best known for making electric cars and space rockets, launched the Boring Company in 2016 to explore the possibility of creating the underground tunnel system.

Musk's celebrity status preceded him, as some visitors pushed and shoved their way into the crowded hall before the event began.

It also comes as Musk wrestles with production problems for the rollout of his highly anticipated Model 3 sedan at Tesla, with some investors concerned his overlapping leadership roles at Boring and his rocket-building firm SpaceX has him spread too thin.

Musk's presentation got underway 25 minutes behind schedule as he arrived late, which he said was due to traffic.

Resistance to his tunneling project marks a somewhat new type of challenge for Musk. Tunnels, on the other hand, Musk detailed were "way less nerve-racking than flying cars" and still "so fun".

The Los Angeles City Council's public works committee last month approved Boring's request to exempt the tunnel from a lengthy environmental impact review that would otherwise be required under state law.

Alongside the execs onstage was Boring Company "mascot" Gary the snail. The tunnel would run southward under Sepulveda Blvd. and would end, without surfacing, below the vicinity of the intersection of Sepulveda Blvd. and Washington Boulevard in Culver City.

On that note, Musk talked about one transit concept, called Loop, a zero-emissions high-speed transit system that could travel up to 150 miles per hour, and carry passengers from downtown LA to the Los Angeles International Airport in eight minutes.

"You won't hear us, you won't feel us, you won't even know we exist", Davis said. Musk said that the full-fledged project would involve a tunnel along the Los Angeles' scandalously busy 405 Freeway where the traffic differed between the seventh and the eighth circles of hell.
