Sunda Evening Update on Subtropical Storm Alberto

Florida and MS launched emergency preparations Saturday ahead of the arrival of Subtropical Storm Alberto, a slow-moving system expected to cause wet misery across the eastern U.S. Gulf Coast over the holiday weekend. A tropical storm warning has been issued for the Dry Tortugas.

Alberto is expected to travel across the eastern Gulf of Mexico Saturday night through Monday and approach the northern part of the Gulf where it could make landfall Monday night.

Those who wish to fearless the conditions and head to the beach should be extra cautious as strong breezes will produce above-normal tides waves ranging from 2 to 4 feet producing risky rip currents through midweek, forecasters said.

A storm surge watch is in effect along the US gulf coast, from Crystal River to the mouth of the Mississippi River. A tropical storm watch and flash flood watch remain in effect.

Landfall is expected to be between Seagrove Beach and Destin in the Florida Panhandle.

The plant harnesses heat and steam from the Earth's core to spin turbines to generate power. Firefighters went door to door evacuating residents before the lava arrived.

After that, it will bring powerful winds and heavy rains as it moves into the Tennessee Valley on Tuesday and Wednesday, the hurricane center said.

Gov. Phil Bryant signed a proclamation Saturday morning declaring a state of emergency ahead of Alberto's landfall.

The flood watch is issued for portions of northeast SC and southeast North Carolina, including Horry and Georgetown counties and neighboring areas, according to the NWS.

"These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions", the National Hurricane Center said in a statement.

Alberto was expected to bring heavy rain and severe wind to Florida and other parts of the Gulf Coast.

Meanwhile, the National Hurricane Center in Miami discontinued all storm surge warnings for most of the state's peninsula.

"While Subtropical Storm Alberto is shifting eastward with a lessened impact on New Orleans, this is an important reminder that hurricane season begins June 1st", Cantrell said in a release.

These storms may produce several inches of rain in a short period of time.

It is forecast to drop as much as 30cm (12in) of rain across MS to western Georgia and to bring storm swells of about 60-120cm (2-4ft) to low-lying areas.
