Guatemala Fuego Volcano Eruption: Deaths Reported, People Missing Amid Lava Flows

At least seven people, including three children, were killed and almost 300 injured on Sunday in the most violent eruption of Guatemala's Fuego volcano in over four decades, officials said. Authorities said they feared the death toll could rise in the coming hours and days. The lava river was running on the other side of the volcano.

Video images published by Sacatepezuez Television showed a charred landscape where a lava flow came into contact with homes.

Hundreds of firefighters, police and soldiers are searching for the missing amid the still-smoking lava.

Officials say land-based searches by law enforcement will continue until conditions improve and boats can be deployed again. The United States Coast Guard identified the plane as a Piper PA-31 Navajo aircraft traveling with four people on board.

"We are evacuating and rescuing people and have reports of 20 wounded six dead and disappeared".

David de Leon, spokesman for the disaster agency, said authorities had already evacuated about 300 people from nearby areas. Some ash also has fallen on the capital.

It's the second time this year it has erupted.

He said on radio a river of lava has overwhelmed a village.

A senior Liberal, speaking on condition of anonymity, said "the party is facing an existential crisis". On Sunday, Wynne said she is still pushing to represent her riding again.

Ash was falling on the Guatemala City area as well as the areas of Sacatepequez, Chimaltenango and Escuintla, which are in south-central Guatemala around the volcano.

Volcan del Fuego is one of the most active volcanoes in Central America.

The Directorate of Civil Aeronautics announced that La Aurora International Airport was closed because of the danger posed to planes by the ash.

Footage showed soot blanket cars and houses in the nearby villages of San Pedro Yepocapa and Sangre de Cristo.

Sergio Cabanas of the National Disaster prevention committee spoke to Reuters and informed that people have been burned and killed including a member of his staff.
