Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States, and just one of three leading causes of death that's on the rise, according to the CDC.

Rates of suicide increased by more than 30 percent in half of states in the U.S. - only decreasing in Nevada. The CDC has also warned that the suicide rate for girls ages 15 to 19 doubled from 2007 to 2015 - when it reached its highest point in 40 years; the suicide rate for boys the same age increased by 30% during the same time period.

The analysis found that slightly more than half the people who had died by suicide did not have any known mental-health condition.

Although there is no single cause for suicide, information from coroners' reports suggests numerous deaths followed relationship problems, substance use, and financial crises, according to the CDC. The others include Alzheimer's disease and drug overdoses.

About 45,000 people committed suicide in the U.S.in 2016.

Monica Kurz, director of the Kansas Suicide Prevention Resource Center, said that while she was not surprised by the numbers in the CDC's report, she is dismayed that suicide continues to be a significant problem in the state. Suicide by asphyxiation or suffocation was the second most common cause of death during that time period.

Unhurried hurricanes: Study says tropical cyclones slowing
Study author James Kossin of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says Harvey is a great example of what he found. That's the real risk of a slower storm. "And, unfortunately, this signal would point to more freshwater flooding".

This finding follows a 2017 CDC report that detailed the rise of suicide prevalence in rural USA counties. "It could be a debate about where can we find some common ground that doesn't simply involve only talking about people with mental illnesses, because as this paper shows, that's not going to get the job done". It's up everywhere. And we know that the rates are actually higher than what's reported.

One clear implication of our work is that during screenings for suicide risk, youth should always be asked whether or not they've known someone who has attempted or died by suicide.

In 2016 alone, there were nearly 45,000 deaths from suicide.

"When you do a psychological autopsy and go and look carefully at medical records and talk to family members of the victims", he said, "90 percent will have evidence of a mental health condition". But Dr. Schuchat said the decrease was minor for a state with a high suicide rate. They were the source of about half of all suicides, the researchers say, and that percentage has stayed stable over the years.

Effective strategies, she said, included teaching coping and problem-solving skills to those at risk, establishing more social "connectedness", and safe storage of pills and guns.

Increasingly, suicide is being viewed not only as a mental health problem but a public health one.

Ex-Senate aide charged with lying about reporter contacts
The newspaper confirmed on Thursday that Watkins previously had a 3-year-long romantic relationship with Wolfe. Prosecutors say he also lied about giving two reporters non-public information about committee matters.

"It's important that we think about this in more broad terms than just as a mental health condition", Schuchat says.

The report called for every society sector - government, public health, healthcare, employers, education, media and community organizations - to cooperate in addressing the factors related to suicide.

For emergencies that are life-threatening, you should immediately call 911. She said it's a myth that to broach the topic of suicide will invite someone to do so or put the thought in their head.
