According to the report, gonorrhea numbers in England are up by 22 percent from 2016 to 2017, with 44,676 diagnoses recorded previous year.

Chlamydia is still the most prevalent of the STIs, with more than 200,000 cases last year, accounting for 48 percent of all new diagnoses in the last year.

Sexually transmitted infections or STI cases are continuing to be a big problem, especially in England where a number of officials are saying the issue is growing due to budget cuts.

According to the lawsuit, Apple has repeatedly denied these charges, and concealed the flaw. The suit alleges that thousands of Apple Watch users have had the same type of experience.

Public Health England is developing a syphilis action plan to address the increase in cases, and recently launched a sexual health campaign targeted at 16 to 24-year-olds called Protect Against STIs.

Increases have been seen in case numbers for chlamydia, gonorrhoea, herpes and syphilis - for which there has been a 28% rise in new diagnoses from 161 in 2016 to 206 in 2017. See story HEALTH STIs.

While the overall number of new STI diagnoses in 2017 was broadly unchanged year on year (422,147 - a drop of 0.3% on 2016), there was also a 22% increase in cases of gonorrhoea - a trend Public Health England described as "concerning".

Out of the estimated 820,000 cases of new gonorrhea infections in the United States each year, an estimated 246,000 are resistant to at least one antibiotic, according to the CDC. "Health inequalities will remain and councils may be unable to respond effectively to unforeseen outbreaks". The agency also reported a notable decline in testing for chlamydia, which is the most common sexually transmitted infection.

"This government is presiding over a national crisis in sexual health, caused in large part by the decision to implement year-on-year cuts to the public health grant which funds sexual health services", Deborah Gold, the National Aids Trust chief executive, points out. PHE said "most of this decrease in testing took place in sexual and reproductive health services where chlamydia testing has fallen by 61% since 2015, likely reflecting a reduction in service provision".

Dr. Gwenda Hughes, head of the STI section at Public Health England, told CNN in March that the case was "the first time a case has displayed such high-level resistance to both of these drugs and to most other commonly used antibiotics".
