Jaguar Land Rover To Move Discovery Production To Slovakia

Jaguar Land Rover is to end production of its Discovery off-roader at its Solihull plant and move the work to its giant new factory in Slovakia.

The big move could result in job losses in the United Kingdom, the company warned, although JLR says it remains "committed to the UK".

The existing plant in Solihull, which now manufactures the Land Rover Discovery, is being retooled by Indian-owned Jaguar Land Rover to accommodate previous statements made by the company that all new models will be electrified by 2020.

JLR said in January it would decide this year whether to build electric cars in its home market after announcing all of its new cars will be available in an electric or hybrid version from 2020.

He added that Singapore's efforts to host the summit would go down in history if the meeting was successful. Four of the nation's six nuclear tests have taken place since Kim took power in 2011.

Two years ago the firm - owned by India's Tata Motors - insisted that its Slovakia plant would "complement" its United Kingdom operations.

After its makeover, the plant will produce the new Range Rover and Range Rover Sport models. The Discovery makes up around 10% of Land Rover's total sales.

Previously, JLR had said the manufacture of the Discovery would be split between Solihull and Slovakia.

Although the livelihoods of many of these agency workers are under threat, JLR said the decision to upgrade its factories in Solihull and Halewood should safeguard the future these plants and the vast majority of its work force. It already employs 1,400 people there as it gears up to open.

JLR - which is owned by the Indian group Tata Motors - said that it remained "committed to the UK".

A JLR statement also detailed plans for a refit at the Halewood production facility in Liverpool ahead of the next Range Rover Evoque's launch next year - meaning the entry-level Range Rover will continue to be produced at the plant.

JLR has an agreement with contract manufacturer Magna Steyr to build the Jaguar E-Pace and all-electric I-Pace, it's first full-electric auto, in Austria. The next-generation Defender is also set to the built there, given its relationship to the Discovery's underpinnings and the lower production costs.
