Iran striker Sardar Azmoun announced his retirement from worldwide football on Thursday, saying he had chose to quit the national team because insults aimed at the 23-year-old had ruined his mother's health.

Carlos Queiroz' side defeated Morocco and drew with Portugal but their group stage loss to Spain, second match out, did for them.

Azmoun, known for his temper and his undiplomatic social media usage, is hoped to reconsider his decision before January's Asian Cup.
