Beryl could strengthen to a Category 2 hurricane this weekend with winds of up to 100 miles per hour before entering the eastern Caribbean on Sunday afternoon, according to the National Hurricane Center.

However, the NHC stressed that the intensity forecast remains highly uncertain given Beryl's small size.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) described Beryl as a Category 1 storm with winds of 80 miles per hour.

Beryl, a tiny, fast-moving storm, will likely be a hurricane when it reaches Caribbean islands over the weekend hit hard by Hurricane Maria a year ago. On this forecast track, Beryl will remain east of the Lesser Antilles through Sunday. It made landfall on the Florida Panhandle as a subtropical storm and ushered drenching rains across states in the South and Midwest. "We don't see many hurricanes that small". Hurricane Beryl has weakened to a tropical storm, the Department of Disaster Management (DDM) reported in its 11am update on Saturday, July 7. Its hurricane-force winds extended only about 10 miles from the storm's center, and tropical storm-force winds extended up to about 35 miles from the center.

The National Hurricane Center is giving this system an 80 percent chance for development through the weekend.

Beryl formed Friday and was a Category 1 storm late in the day.

Meantime, forecasters are also keeping an eye on a weather system off the coast of North Carolina that could turn into a tropical depression over the weekend. Weakening is expected once Beryl reaches the eastern Caribbean Sea on Monday, but the system may not degenerate into an open trough until it reaches the vicinity of Hispaniola and the central Caribbean Sea.

Amy Parker DeSorbo, director of St. George Village Botanical Gardens, encouraged St. Croix residents to attend Mango Melee, which is slated for Sunday, at least a couple of days before the storm is expected to approach the territory.

As Beryl moves toward Puerto Rico and Haiti, however, it is expected to diminish to a tropical storm.
