Border Patrol operations in Down East Maine alarm Canadian fishermen

In a June 24 incident, a United States border patrol that had been launched from ME "attempted to stop" a Canadian fishing vessel in Canadian waters, Laurence Cook, chairman of the Grand Manan Fishermen's Association, said on Facebook.

"They claim to be looking for illegal immigrants", said Cook in his Facebook posting.

A spokesman for New Brunswick fishermen based on Grand Manan Island says at least 10 Canadian fishing boats have been intercepted by U.S. Border Patrol agents since last week while fishing in the disputed waters around Machias Seal Island.

John Babcock, a Global Affairs Canada spokesman, said the government continues to investigate the incidents "in Canadian waters", partly by engaging with the American agencies involved.

In a statement, the Association believes this was part of a regular exercise conducted by officials.

Laurence Cook, chairman of the fishermen's association, wrote on Facebook that the fisherman, Nick Brown, informed US Border Patrol Agents he was in a Canadian vessel legally fishing in Canadian waters.

She said the agency did not have statistics on how many USA vessels have been stopped in ME this year and the last five years and would not say how many vessels and personnel were involved in offshore Border Patrol operations or where precisely agents are patrolling.

US president Donald Trump's crackdown on illegal immigration isn't happening just on the US-Mexico border, but also in a large body of water shared by US and Canadian lobster harvesters, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation reports.

"Canada's sovereignty over the Machias Seal Island and the surrounding waters is long standing and has a strong foundation in worldwide law", he said.

The agents claimed to be looking for undocumented immigrants, he said. But once they are in the same waters, it becomes almost impossible to determine at a glance whether the fishing boats are Canadian or American.

Even so, Drouin said that a Canadian Coast Guard ship appeared in the zone in recent days, an apparent response to the US actions.

The island is located between the Canadian province of New Brunswick and the USA state of Maine.

The agency couldn't say how numerous vessels stopped were fishing.

Statistics show more migrants are heading out of the United States for Canada rather than the other way around, however.

His revelations called into question complaints from Canadians that they are being targeted by American law enforcement in a marine "grey zone" that both countries claim as sovereign territory.

The State Department did not respond to a request for comment.

Federal law gives Border Patrol the authority to stop, search and examine any vehicle entering the US including those in a maritime environment, Malin said.

"Canadian fishermen are being harassed by US Border Patrol". So far, 21 Canadian vessels have been interviewed by local agents in the 2018 fiscal year, she said, with zero immigration arrests made.

"If the Canadians want to use the term harass, they have been harassing us for years", Drouin said.

United States media report it was the former Sacramento King's player, who was on contract for Moscow's BC Khimki. After two years at UCLA (2009-11), Honeycutt was selected 35th overall in the 2011 Draft by the Sacramento Kings.

Drouin, a member of Maine's lobster advisory council, said he witnessed three other vessels that were also stopped and questioned, and has seen several Border Patrol vessels in the area over the last month.
