Kevin Anderson defeats defending champion Roger Federer at Wimbledon

Already the owner of the most Wimbledon titles-eight-in history, Federer is playing like he's going to add another to his resume.

Roger Federer's hopes of a ninth Wimbledon title bit the dust as South African Kevin Anderson recovered from two sets down to win a quarter-final cliffhanger 2-6 6-7 (5) 7-5 6-4 13-11 on a tension-filled Court One on Wednesday.

Federer also refused to blame the unfamiliar surrounds of Court One, despite never looking entirely comfortable on it. "I nearly could have".

Back to deuce. From there, it all began to change.

Serving at 5-6, Anderson fell behind Love-30, which put Federer two points form defeat.

The comeback was just beginning.

"Like a year ago, I received the information that they can't reschedule my match on the other court because of the tickets that are presold".

How To Watch England Vs
England's success has largely come from set pieces and Hoddle thinks Croatia will be scared to concede them tonight. Every World Cup game can be streamed in English with the Fox Sports Go app .

That meant Federer had equalled but not bettered his previous best set-winning streak which came between the third round in 2005 and the final in 2006.

How hard was it to see this coming?

After that, Federer began to struggle and Anderson unloaded his swings on every shot. But there was more.

Anderson spurned the chance for another break when he rammed a forehand into the net and was forced to settle for a tiebreak after Federer recovered from 30-0 down in the final game of the set.

"I heard that the organisers were planning to cancel my match if Gael Monfils and Kevin Anderson went to a fifth".

Even by Federer's stratospheric standards, the first set was a little absurd.

Not that Anderson is anything other than an elite tennis player.

City have retained their interest in Mahrez ever since and finally agreed a deal to take him from Leicester early this week. Pep Guardiola is committed to playing attacking football, and City's performances last season were outstanding.

Federer boasts a 4-0 career record against 2017 US Open runner-up Anderson.

Anderson's big serve and power seemed to bother Federer, who never seemed quite right.

As the fifth set became as much a test of mental strength as anything, from 4-all to 6-all to 8-all to 10-all, Anderson was as steady as he needed to be.

Anderson then served it out, ending things with a 128 miles per hour service victor, and raised both arms overhead.

However, it was Federer who was stunningly the first to falter and Anderson took advantage to book a semifinal clash with either John Isner or Milos Raonic.

For the first time in three years the Swiss maestro will play a match away from his beloved Centre Court lawn after organisers pencilled him in for a Court One slot.

Three times he was scheduled last on court, putting him at risk of falling victim to fading light with the burden of having to return the following day.

Novak Djokovic advanced to the last four at a Grand Slam for the first time since 2016 with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 Wimbledon quarterfinal victory over Kei Nishikori on Wednesday. That earned a code violation from chair umpire Carlos Ramos. "I've been building in the last couple of weeks and my level of tennis is going up", he said. "I don't want to stop here".
