In anticipation of Trump filling the vacancy left by the retiring Anthony Kennedy - widely considered to be the court's "swing vote" - with a judge thought to have more conservative bona fides, many outside advocacy groups are already bracing for what will likely be a contentious confirmation battle.

Conservatives have taken issue with a potential Kavanaugh nomination, with some critics on the right citing his closeness to the Bush 43 administration while others believe he doesn't have a strong enough stance against abortion.

A half-hour after Trump is scheduled to appear with his choice in an East Room ceremony, Demand Justice, MoveOn, Indivisible, and People for the American Way will gather at the Supreme Court for a rally in opposition.

Kavanaugh is a well-known figure in Washington and has been involved in some of the biggest controversies of the past two decades.

A graduate of Yale and Yale Law, he also was a member of Kenneth Starr's independent counsel team that investigated President Bill Clinton.

The pollster said the result is comparable to attitudes in February 2016 following the sudden death of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.

The Duchess of Sussex , 36, wore an olive green dress by the label, topped off with a wide-brimmed hat by Stephen Jones. Fun fact? Their official titles actually change in Northern Ireland, where locals call them Baron and Baroness Kilkeel.

"He's a brilliant jurist with a clear and effective writing style, universally regarded as one of the finest and sharpest legal minds of our time".

Kavanaugh, 53, began his career as a clerk to Kennedy. "I am deeply honored to be nominated to fill his seat on the Supreme Court", Kavanaugh said in his first public statement as a nominee.

In recent years the Supreme Court has made landmark decisions on fundamental and often politically charged issues ranging from same-sex marriage, abortion, gun rights, corporate money in elections, and free speech. Some conservative activists have questioned whether he would rule sufficiently aggressively as a justice. Before that, Kavanaugh served for more than five years in the Bush White House from July 2003 until May 2006.

"My judicial philosophy is straightforward. And a judge must interpret the Constitution as written, informed by history, and tradition and precedent", Kavanaugh said during the ceremony in which he emphasized his family and his Roman Catholic faith.

On the Democratic side, the focus will be on Sens. Senate Republicans hold only a 51-49 majority, leaving them hardly any margin if Democrats hold the line. All three are Republican targets for the confirmation vote: They all supported Gorsuch and come from Trump-won states where they face re-election this fall. Hawkins said one "silver lining" in Kennedy's departure is that Chief Justice John Roberts, a Republican who famously broke ranks with his party to cast the deciding vote upholding Obamacare in 2013, may shift toward filling that role.

The Judicial Crisis Network is planning a $1.4 million ad buy in Alabama, Indiana, North Dakota and West Virginia - states with moderate Democratic senators who could be pressured to vote for Trump's nominee.

LeBron James signing a 'historic moment' for Lakers
Pelinka echoed that by saying "This is a historic moment for the Lakers, and we could not feel more grateful and honored". And, as hard as it may be to believe, James wasn't the only free agent to change teams this year.

Liberals also took issue with the presence of Leonard Leo, the Federalist Society's executive vice president, who is now on leave from the group of conservative attorneys and scholars to work with Trump's Supreme Court nomination team. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell also received a heads-up from the president.

After several years in the Bush White House, which included a time as White House staff secretary, Kavanaugh was nominated for the D.C. Appeals Court.

The White House has tapped former Republican Sen.

Some Trump supporters who were near the scene said they did not understand the point of the protests, arguing that people need to give the nominee a chance and praising Trump's record as president. I have. I did this when I - and I voted for a lot of Republican nominees. Gorsuch restored the court's conservative majority.

Trump kept his choice of Gorsuch under wraps until the last minute, save for just a few outlets that reported correctly on his pick.

Since the 2016 campaign, Trump has made his process for picking Supreme Court justices fairly transparent.

If the party sticks together, the president's choice will be sitting on the Supreme Court when its new term starts in October. He also was a key aide to Kenneth Starr during Starr's investigation of President Bill Clinton, worked on behalf of George W.
