The first-division team announced that the 34-year-old, who had stints in the English Premier League with Liverpool and Chelsea, will wear the No. 9 jersey for Tosu, now 17th in the 18-team J. League standings.

With his time at boyhood club Atletico coming to an end last month, Torres had been linked with destinations including the Chicago Fire in MLS and Australian A-League club Sydney FC, but opted for Japan's J-League.

It had been widely reported that Sydney FC, with the FFA's assistance, were chasing former Liverpool and Atletico Madrid striker Fernando Torres - only for the deal to fall through in the last 24 hours - with the 2010 FIFA World Cup victor announcing he had signed for J-League club Sagan Tosu.

With the national team, Torres won two European titles and a World Cup, while he also added two UEFA Europa League titles and a UEFA Champions League at club level.

Sagan Tosu were promoted to the J1 League in 2012 and have achieved a highest finish of fifth place in their existence. They finished eighth last season, but are mired in a relegation battle halfway through the current campaign.

Former Spain teammate Andres Iniesta, who joined Vissel Kobe from Barcelona, will also be playing in the J-League and Torres said that meant he would already have a good friend in the competition.
