YouTube to invest $25mn in countering fake news

At present, the company is directing its users away from fake news through the Top News and Breaking News sections that feature content from major publications, as per 9To5Google. For this, it has earmarked United States dollars 25 million to create a group of experts that will advise on new features, TechCrunch reported.

The decision comes ahead of the 2018 USA midterm elections, a time when other social media sites are under scrutiny for potentially impacting political outcomes fueled by false information.

I think for any news to be termed as credible, authoritativeness is essential and for the same reason thats, why YouTube is investing in new product features to give priority authoritative sources.

News outlets often break news by writing articles first, because they can be produced faster than videos. As a result, over the next few weeks YouTube users in the USA will see short previews in YouTube search results with links to the full news article.

Kylie's make up brand kicked off when she introduced her $29 lip kits that included a lip liner and a lip colour. Since then, the company has sold $630m of makeup, helped in a large part by Jenner's own social media presence.

Youtube executives, announcing the move at an event for media in NY on Monday, called it a "fast follow" to the Google News Initiative announced in March, which similarly aims to boost the visibility of news from credible sources.

Under the innovation funding plan unveiled by YouTube, it would " provide funding across approximately 20 global markets to support news organisations in building sustainable video operations".

"YouTube is expanding its Player for Publishers, a solution that allows publishers and news organisations to embed YouTube's video player on their own websites and mobile apps".

By prioritising verifiable content to users and making people work harder to find sensationalist material, YouTube hopes to separate the wheat from the chaff and bolster its own credibility in the process - although it stops short of removing "fake news" content entirely.

The company said Monday it will make "authoritative" news sources more prominent, especially in the wake of breaking news events when false information can spread quickly.

It is already available in 17 countries, including the U.S., U.K., France, Italy, Japan, India, Mexico, Brazil, South Africa, and Nigeria.

In addition, YouTube will provide links to Wikipedia or the Encyclopedia Britannica with controversial videos or conspiratorial issues such as the Moon landing. The company says it will double the number of countries that can access these features soon. Six incredible YouTube Creators, including John Green, Ingrid Nilsen, and Mark Watson, will be working with MediaWise to bring awareness to digital literacy and help educate teens.

YouTube said news organisations of all types can apply to the grant, which can be used to build key capabilities, train staff on video best practices, enhance production facilities and develop formats optimised for online video.
