Emmett Till Murder Investigation Reopened Because of 'New Evidence'

The U.S. government has reopened an investigation into the 1955 killing of black teenager Emmett Till in MS, saying it had discovered new information in the case, which helped spark the nation's civil rights movement. Although it has not been confirmed by the Justice Department, her confession is most likely the new evidence that was cited when the case was reopened.

What's the history of the case?

The 2017 book "The Blood of Emmett Till" by Timothy B. Tyson quotes a white woman, Carolyn Donham, as saying during a 2008 interview that she wasn't truthful when she testified that Till grabbed her, whistled and made sexual advances at a MS store in 1955.

Ms Bryant also said he told her "you don't need to be afraid of me", alleging he used an obscenity and mentioning something he had done "with white women before".

Four days after the alleged incident, Roy Bryant and J.W. Milam visited the home where Emmett had been staying and demanded to speak with the teen.

Bryant told a reporter how they killed Emmett and dumped his body in the Tallahatchie, but because of double jeopardy laws, they couldn't be tried again. Against advice, she demanded that his funeral be open casket.

A few days before he was killed, Till and his MS cousins went to a country market owned by a white couple, Roy Bryant and his wife, Carolyn. Mose Wright, Emmett's Mississippi-based great-uncle, positively identified Bryant and Milam as his great-nephew's killers. The two men have since died, in 1994 and 1981, respectively. Till's disfigured body was found tied to a weight in the river.

Carolyn Donham claimed Till had accosted her, but told author Timothy B Tyson it was untrue. "Nothing that boy did could ever justify what happened to him", the book quotes her as saying. Sen. Two men who confessed to killing Emmett, only after they had been acquitted by an all-white jury in MS, are dead. They were not retried. The case was closed in 2007 with authorities saying the suspects were dead; a state grand jury didn't file any new charges.

The Department of Justice has reopened the case surrounding the killing of the black teen after receiving "new information", The Associated Press reported Thursday.

District Attorney Dewayne Richardson declined comment Thursday on any role he might have in the case.

Bryant, whose name is now Carolyn Donham, is in her 80s and lives in North Carolina.

TYSON: I think that it's a cynical political charade and utter hypocrisy for the Justice Department of Jeff Beauregard Sessions and Donald Trump to feign caring about a black child murdered in 1955 when they're holding children of color in cages, when they can't find a moral distinction between the Nazis and those who demonstrate against them, when Jeff Sessions has spent his whole career supporting restrictions on voting rights.
