Fobbed off: woman accidentally steals vehicle for two weeks after key mix-up

The woman accidentally stole his auto after driving to Walmart right after picking up her rental Nissan Sentra from the local Enterprise Rental vehicle.

When a auto is stolen, it's atypical for anyone to laugh about it - the seriousness of what has been stolen, including what is possibly inside the vehicle, doesn't elicit a humorous response.

Police say the woman initially rented a black sedan from Enterprise in Cornwall in June.

He had remembered the owner of the Infiniti, who also went to Enterprise to rent a auto, thinking his vehicle was in fact stolen. The manager, now slightly confused, observed the keys to belong to an Infinity, a vehicle the woman did not rent.

After 2 weeks, she came back to Enterprise return the vehicle, and she made sure she complained to the manager about giving her a dirty, obviously used auto. "For the next two weeks, the woman drove around and used the black auto for her regular everyday activities", the police said. "You should never leave your key fob or keys in your vehicle - and always do not forget to lock your auto doors before walking away from your auto".

A Canadian man has had his auto returned to him after it was stolen two weeks ago - but the story of where it ended up is nearly too good to be true.

The rental agent had her retrace her steps and they went to the Walmart parking lot where they found the Nissan still parked.

When she exited with her groceries, she loaded them into a vehicle that wasn't her rental.

"The manager was quite puzzled, as she's turning in keys to an Infiniti, when she rented a Nissan in the first place", MacRae said. She also said there were papers in the glove compartment and a dirty ashtray, but it still wasn't enough to tip her off. "And she was giving the manager the business on renting her a dirty vehicle", MacKay said.

The manager was confused because his lot didn't even rent out the type of vehicle she was describing. There sat the Nissan Sentra, exactly where the woman had parked it two weeks earlier.

She immediately phoned police to explain the situation.

"My initial thought was, 'I'm going to have to find out where she got this vehicle from, or my God, how am I going to put cuffs on this elderly female, '" the Cornwall Community Police Service officer told As It Happens guest host Rosemary Barton.
