The Fed Is Learning What Being Donald Trump's Ex-Girlfriend Feels Like

Donald Trump escalated economic global tensions on Friday, lashing out a range of targets that included the European Union, the Federal Reserve and China, indicating that he is prepared to raise tariffs on Chinese imports from $34bn to cover the entire $505bn of Chinese imports.

During an interview with CNBC, Trump said that while Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, who took over the role in February, was a "a very good man", he did not like the central bank's recent interest rate hikes.

Trump nominated Powell as Fed chairman previous year to replace Janet Yellen.

Earlier today Trump threatened to unleash significant tariffs on all $500bn of Chinese imports to the US.

Trump argued the Fed's rate hikes went against "all of the work that goes into doing what we're doing".

The rate rises, which make borrowing more expensive, are meant to head off uncontrolled price rises as the U.S. economy expands. The released Nixon tapes revealed numerous conversations between the president and Burns in which Nixon pressures the Fed chair to keep rates low. I don't really - I'm not happy about it.

"They're picking the wrong customer, I'll tell you that - you know how intense he is on this issue", he said, adding: "Xi seems to think if he waits out the November elections, Trump will be weakened and therefore will lighten the bite".

He did not specify what he meant - whether he was talking about people in the intelligence community or people with high IQs. Most recently, protesters in London last week flew a " Trump Baby" blimp during his visit to the United Kingdom.

"Tightening now hurts all that we have done", Trump continued, calling the Fed's strategy into question, and raising larger concerns over whether he is trying to interfere in the independence of the bank.

Treasury yields and the dollar edged lower following the cable network's broadcast of that excerpt of its interview with the president. During the interview, Trump himself predicted the response: "Now I'm just saying the same thing that I would have said as a private citizen", he said. Interest rates are seen as the domain of the central bank, while the currency is regarded as the responsibility of USA treasury officials.

Higher rates, however, strengthen the dollar against the world's currencies, which makes the United States a more expensive - and potentially less attractive - place to invest. In June, the nation's central bank raised rates for the seventh time since December 2015, in a move created to slowly cool the economy.

The Federal Reserve's structure is unique within the USA bureaucratic system. S&P stock-index futures declined along with the Stoxx Europe 600 gauge after Trump's comments aired.

During the 2016 presidential campaign, Trump was highly critical of the Fed and accused its policymakers of keeping rates at ultralow levels to favour Democrats.
