Ricciardo joins Renault F1 team on two-year deal

This morning Australians are waking up to the news that Aussie F1 driver Daniel Riccardo is leaving Red Bull.

McLaren CEO Zak Brown believes his team was "pretty close" to signing Renault-bound Daniel Ricciardo for the 2019 Formula One season.

It will be interesting to see if Red Bull's team orders now favour Max Verstappen, who will be their main driver from next year.

It was probably one of the most hard decisions to take in my career so far, said Ricciardo.

The immediate questions to be answered are who will be the Australian's replacement alongside Max Verstappen and what will happen to Spaniard Carlos Sainz, whose place he has taken? "But I thought it was time to try something new and take on a new task", said ricciardo after signing the contract with Renault.

The 29-year-old Ricciardo is already familiar with Renault, whose engines have powered Red Bull's cars.

Ricciardo is now fifth in the driver standings, 14 points adrift of Valtteri Bottas in fourth, and has two victories under his belt this season.

"And I know that each time Renault has been in the sport they eventually won".

Renault appeared to confirm that Sainz would be making way for Ricciardo. Ricciardo added: "I hope to be able to help them in this journey".

At Haas, one of two Ferrari "satellite" teams, the likely pairing for 2019 is current driver Jan Magnussen with Charles Leclerc, who will be promoted from Alfa Romeo-Sauber on the way to an eventual drive at Ferrari.

An fantastic journey needs an equally impressive vehicle to complement it, and they don't come much more incredible than the Red Bull RB7.

Gasly's promotion would leave Red Bull with a headache at Toro Rosso, with no as-yet qualified youngster seemingly in a position to step in from the ranks of Red Bull junior drivers and Sainz unlikely to return there. "In the meantime, there are still nine races left in 2018 and we are fully focused on maximizing every opportunity for Max and Daniel for the remainder of the season".

Red Bull won four championships in a row with Renault between 2010 and 2013 but have since fallen out and Ricciardo's decision to stick with the French engines, despite his frustration over their performance, will sting.
