On the current forecast track, the center of Hector is slated to pass about 150 miles south of the Big Island by Wednesday afternoon, and about 300 miles south of Oahu by Wednesday night.

As of 5 a.m. today, the Category 4 storm was 925 miles east-southeast of Hilo packing maximum sustained winds of 145 mph with stronger gusts.

There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect but the center said the Hawaiian Islands should monitor the hurricane's progress.

The volcano is in the middle of a three-month eruption of lava which has been spewing since May and has covered 13.4 square miles of the island's surface. Lava from the volcano has destroyed more than 700 structures, including residences, since eruptions began in May.

The eruption has surpassed eruptions from the lower zone of several weeks and 88 days recorded in 1840 and 1955, respectively, according to Janet Babb, a geologist with the US Geological Survey.

Big Island officials are taking precautions in advance of the storm nearing the state.

Meterologist James Spann said on Twitter that it was "too soon to determine what kind of impacts might occur in the state, since track errors can be large at long time ranges".

Hector was a Category 3 storm early Sunday as it churned toward the Hawaiian Islands, an archipelago that includes the Big Island.

Some predictions put the storm on a virtual collision course with the Kilauea Volcano on the southern part of the island.

Meanwhile, forecasters also have their eyes on two Tropical Storms in the Eastern Pacific.

Hector is expected to hit Hawaii's Big Island late on Wednesday morning.
