A strong aftershock has shaken the Indonesian island of Lombok, causing the collapse of several buildings.

According to Indonesia's meteorological agency, Thursday's quake struck at a depth of 12.5 miles, originating several miles northwest of Lombok.

Aid begun trickling into some of the most isolated regions, officials said midday Thursday, but many people displaced by the quake still lack basic supplies.

The strong aftershock, measured at magnitude 5.9 by the US Geological Survey, caused panic, damage to buildings, landslides and injuries.

The governor of the province that includes Lombok where the quake was centred, the military, the national search and rescue agency and regent of North Lombok all issued different death tolls for Sunday's natural disaster that ranged from 226 to 381.

The earlier earthquakes also left cracks in walls and roofs, making the weakened buildings susceptible to collapse. "The grandson tried to help the grandmother to get out but he pushed too hard", she said.

Thousands of tourists visiting Lombok - as well as the nearby Gili Islands and Bali - have been evacuated or have chosen to leave since the weekend.

A July 29 quake on Lombok killed 16 people.
