The testimony of Rick Gates, Paul Manafort's longtime deputy and the star witness in the government's bank-fraud and tax-evasion case against the former Trump campaign manager, came to a dramatic end Wednesday with defense attorneys accusing him of lying about the number of extramarital affairs he's had.

Day 7 of the Paul Manafort trial begins in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday with the continuation of a blistering cross examination of Manafort's former business associate Rick Gates.

Manafort, seated at the defence table, stared intently at Gates while his defence attorney hammered him with aggressive questions, but his former business partner carefully avoided his gaze.

Gates, who worked as Manafort's right-hand man for a decade, served as deputy chairman of the Trump campaign.

During his second day of testimony, Gates said Manafort used members from a Cyprus-based law firm as ghost directors of the shell companies through a director known as "Doctor K", who set up a series of bank accounts in order to disguise Manafort's connection to the Ukraine, USA Today reported.

"I've acknowledged there was a period where I had another relationship", said Gates, who is married.

"I am here to tell the truth and to take responsibility for my actions".

After saying Monday that he committed crimes with Manafort, including concealing offshore accounts to avoid reporting them to the US government at tax time and claiming false income to get loans, Manafort defense attorney Kevin Downing asked the witness, "This jury is just supposed to believe you after all the lies that you've told and the fraud you've committed?" It's a practice he has admitted to doing to the tune of hundreds of thousands of dollars from Manafort, and under pressure from Downing, he agreed that it could be called embezzlement.

Gates admitted to hiding his own income from the IRS in offshore bank accounts. Downing asking, drawing an immediate objection from Greg Andres, the special counsel's lead prosecutor. Prosecutors allege that he failed to pay taxes on millions he made from his work for a Russia-friendly Ukrainian political party, then lied to get loans when the cash stopped coming in.

Manafort, 69, is the first defendant to go to court to fight charges stemming from Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

Gates, 46, has pleaded guilty to conspiracy and is cooperating with the government as it prosecutes Manafort for allegedly evading United States taxes on tens of millions of dollars earned from political consulting work they did together in Ukraine from 2006 to 2014.

"Mr Downing, I've made many mistakes over many years", said Gates, before being cut off by the judge, who snapped: "This isn't the time for that". Prosecutors agreed to drop a wide variety of additional charges against Gates in exchange for his guilty pleas and cooperation against Manafort.

Paul invites Russian lawmakers to Washington
At the beginning of July, a group of USA senators met with Russian officials ahead of the Helsinki summit between Trump and Putin. Congress ahead of midterm elections, and such visits can potentially influence negotiations over U.S. sanctions between U.S.

Manafort's accountant was asked about a purported $10 million loan from Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska.

After Downing asked Gates Wednesday whether he had multiple affairs, Judge T.S. Ellis had a private conversation, out of earshot of the jury.

On Tuesday, Gates did connect one part of the bank fraud charges against Manafort to his role in the Trump campaign.

Manafort is accused of filing fraudulent information to secure $16 million in loans from Calk's bank. Manafort welcomed more than $65 million from Ukrainian political backers' foreign entities into his own secret Cypriot and other offshore accounts during Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych's four years in office, according to Magionos.

She essentially connected the dots of testimony from previous witnesses - vendors, Manafort's bookkeeper and accountants, and Gates - but did so in a way that presented direct links between one witness's part of the story and another's.

In one such email, Manafort instructed Gates to proceed with plans to transfer funds from one of his shell companies, Leviathan Advisors Limited, to their consulting group, DMP International.
