Government 'to make extradition request to Moscow' for poisoning suspects

The UK is poised to ask Russian Federation to extradite suspects over the nerve agent poisoning in Salisbury, according to reports.

A Whitehall source told the Guardian: 'The CPS has been asked to prepare extradition requests and we understand they are ready to go.

Both are suspected of poisoning Sergei Skripal, a former double agent, and his daughter, Yulia, on March 4 with Novichok, a military-grade nerve agent developed by the Soviet Union during the Cold War.

London blamed Russian Federation of being behind the Skripal attacks in the weeks after the incident, a charge Russian Federation has categorically denied.

The Guardian says British investigators have pieced together the movements of two Russians in the Skripal attack.

Britain blamed Russian Federation for the poisonings and identified the poison as Novichok, a deadly group of nerve agents developed by the Soviet military in the 1970s and 1980s. Intense debates within Whitehall have split between United Kingdom officials who see the extradition request as a futile political move, while others would prefer to play hardball with the Russians.

But foreign policy experts in Britain say Russian Federation will nearly certainly reject the request. "It's nearly a rerun of the situation", The Guardian quoted a government source as saying.

Since then, a British woman, Dawn Sturgess, died last month after coming across a small bottle containing Novichok near Salisbury where the Skripals were struck down.

Russian officials refused to hand over suspects who Britain claimed were responsible for the murder of Aleksandr Litvinenko with a rare radioactive isotope in 2006.

Russian Federation retaliated by expelling Western diplomats.

Dawn Sturgess subsequently died from Novichok near Salisbury.

Her partner, Charlie Rowley, was left seriously ill from the effects of the nerve agent but was discharged from hospital.
