A 5.9-magnitude quake aftershock struck at a shallow depth in the northwest of Lombok Thursday, the US Geological Survey said, even as relief agencies raced to find survivors among the wreckage from Sunday's quake.

Today's quake was the third big trmor to hit Lombok in little more than a week but there were no immediate reports of deaths or injuries.

There are fears that a humanitarian crisis is looming as thousands are in desperate need of clean water, food, medicine and shelter.

Disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said in a statement that information being provided by different agencies needs to be complete before it can be cross-checked and officially verified. Meanwhile, officials said the epicentre of the third quake was on land and so there was no risk of a tsunami.

The earlier earthquakes also left cracks in walls and roofs, making the weakened buildings susceptible to collapse.

Still, government assistance was barely a trickle in the west Lombok village of Kekait where Zulas Triani, an elementary school teacher who was sharing a tent with 30 others, said they had received only a basket with three noodle packets, five eggs and a small ration of water.

A total of 164 people were now confirmed dead in the quake, Nugroho told AFP, with a further 1,400 seriously injured and more than 150,000 displaced.

Thousands of people have been sleeping in makeshift shelters or out in the open.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire and is regularly hit by earthquakes.
